1 UTTER, MADELINE; BURK, DALE A. (FOREWORD). Pinkham Pioneers.
Stoneydale Press, Stevensville. 1931291578 / 9781931291576 s Brand new book.
Among the more dramatic stories of hardscrabble survival achieved by homesteaders in Montana's history is that of the settling of a remote mountain ridge and creek bottom in the timbered country of northwestern Montana called Pinkham Ridge where hillbillies from West Virginia came to establish claims under the Homestead Act in the early 1900s and, in the process, created an historic legend of their own. As the hillbilly "pioneers" of Pinkham Ridge just to the west of the town of Eureka and south of the even tinier settlement of Rexford, these people faced an arduous task as they hacked their homesteads out of the wilds by logging, farming, living off the land when necessary to put food on the table, and some even became moonshiners to help survive financially through hard times as they struggled to prove up on their homesteads. Some failed and some succeeded. Includes some 60 stories of pioneering Pinkham families, a number of poems by the author, and many photographs of the early-day residents at work, of the famous Pinkham school, and at cimmunity and school gatherings.
