Chaim Arlosoroff (1899-1933) was born in Russia and educared in Germany. After hs emigration to Palestine in the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the Labor Zionist Party and head of the political department of the Jewish Agency - in effect the foreign minister of the state-in-the-making. His reputation gre rapidly, and his articles and speeches were soon treated as blueprints for the socialist ideas of a Jewish state. These were in bitter opposition to the principles of the militaristic, right-wing Revisionist movement headed by Vladimire Jabotinsky. At the age of thirty-four, Arlosoroff was assassinated while walking with his wife along the beach in Tel Aviv. His murder marked a turning point in modern Zionist history, with polarization between right and left among Zionists in Palestine and in the Diaspora, creating a violent ideological rift that still besets Israeli political life.
