1 BEMELMANS, LUDWIG. Father, Dear Father.
The Viking Press, New York: 1953. Fourth Printing. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good reading copy. Dustjacket is quite worn.
On the surface, this is about a European trip which Bemelmans took in the early 1950s with his thirteen-year-old daughter Barbara and her digest-sized poodle, Little Bit. But Bemelmans doesn't "just take a trip" - ever: he adventures into the heart of people and places and brings them back alive in his notebooks and sketchbooks.

The entrancing words and pictures assembled herein form a record of his lifelong love affair with the art of dining. And the reader is transported to the grand hotels of Europe and America and the restaurants- from the mythical Hotel Spendide to the tour d'Argent in Paris, l'Ousteau de Baumaniere in Provence, and le Pavillon in New York.

4 BEMELMANS, LUDWIG. My War With The United States.
The Modern Library, New York: 1941. First Modern Library Edition. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition considering its age. Dustjacket is torn.
What this country really needs is an entertaining story of its own foibles in wartime. Bemelmans' My War with the United States fulfils that need and provides a welcome antidote to the national jitters. It persuades you by its honesty and its charm that life in the American Army can be anything from a consecration to a lark. Both amiable and wise, this book is a special gem of eccentric literature, and its illustrations cannot fail to bring a happy chuckle to soldier and civilian alike.

5 BEMELMANS, LUDWIG. Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.
Viking Press, New York: 1944. Book Club Edition. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition with minor wear to DJ.
This is an extraordinary book which will amuse everyone, but is much more than amusing. It will most impress those who completely understand the biting satire beneath its witty, glittering surface.

6 BEMELMANS, LUDWIG. The World Of Bemelmans: An Omnibus.
The Viking Press, New York: 1955. A numbr of the stories and sketches in this book originally appeared elsewhere. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition considering its age.
Here are four favorite Bemelmans books that have not been easily available. My War with the United States is his discovery of America in 1914, when he left Austria for the United States prepared to hunt Indians, and wound up in the U.S. Army. Small Beer is the risible saga of his adventures and discoveries on the long road from a remote Tirolese village to New York, Hollywood, and the cosmopolitan world. The Donkey Inside takes us on his own magic carpet to the little, hidden-away country of Ecuador - the high life of Quito, the home life of the provinces, and a good slice of exotic side life. Finally there is I Love You, I Love You, I Love You - a star-spangled potpourri that presents the author in his various roles of bon vivant, doting parent, luxurious vagabond, and somewhat gullible uplifter of down-and-outers. There are also several of his choices articles and stories not published before in book form.
