1 CALDWELL, ERSKINE. A House In The Uplands.
The New American Library, New York: 1946. Reprint Edition. A Signet Book. s Softcover. Good condition considering its age.
A house in the Uplands is not only another facet of the author's almost completed panorama of the South, it is also a progression, both in depth (from the bottom to the top of the social ladder), and in solutions it offers for the problems of the modern South. While Grady Dunbar typifies the vanishing aristocrat, whose deforested plantation is mortgaged to the hilt to pay for his drinking and gambling debts - an essentially tragic figure, self-doomed and the legatee of disaster - his cousin Ben is the prototype of the liberal lawyer who has emerged to save the South. Ben Dunbar fights the local machine, gives free advice to Negroes and white sharecroppers; and although powerless to arrest Grady's downfall, achieves a grudging tribute from the local political boss.
