2 AS TOLD THROUGH NEIHARDT, JOHN G. (FLAMING RAINBOW); DELORIA, JR., VINE (INTRODUCTION). Black Elk Speaks: Being The Life Story Of A Holy Man Of The Oglala Sioux.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 1988. 0803283598 / 9780803283596 Ninth Bison Book printing. s Softcover. Good condition.
Black Elk Speaks is the story of the Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863-1950) and his people during the momentous twilight years of the nineteenth century. Black Elk met the distinguished poet, writer, and critic John G. Neihardt (1881-1973) in 1930 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and chose Neihardt to tell his story. Neihardt understood and conveyed Black Elk's experiences in this powerful and inspirational message for all humankind. When Black Elk received his great vision, white settlers were invading the Lakotas' homeland, decimating buffalo herds, and threatening to extinguish the Lakotas' way of life. The Lakotas fought fiercely to retain their freedom and way of life, a dogged resistance that resulted in a remarkable victory at the Little Bighorn and an unspeakable tragedy at Wounded Knee. Black Elk Speaks offers much more than a precious glimpse of a vanished time, however. As related by Neihardt, Black Elk's searing visions of the unity of humanity and the earth have made this book a venerated spiritual classic. Whether appreciated as the poignant tale of a Lakota life, a history of a Native nation, or an enduring spiritual testament, Black Elk Speaks is unforgettable. This new edition features two additional essays by John G. Neihardt that further illuminate his experience with Black Elk; an essay by Alexis Petri, great-granddaughter of John G. Neihardt, that celebrates Neihardt's remarkable accomplishments; and a look at the legacy of the special relationship between Neihardt and Black Elk, written by Lori Utecht, editor of Knowledge and Opinion: Essays and Literary Criticism of John G. Neihardt.

4 SANDOZ, MARI; DELORIA, JR., VINE (INTRODUCTION). Crazy Horse: The Strange Man Of The Oglalas, A Biography.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2008. Third Edition. s Softcover. Brand new book.
Crazy Horse, the legendary military leader of the Oglala Sioux whose personal power and social nonconformity contributed to his reputation as being "strange," fought in many famous battles, including the Little Bighorn, and held out tirelessly against the U.S. government's efforts to confine the Lakotas to reservations. Finally, in the spring of 1877 he surrendered, only to meet a violent death. More than a century later Crazy Horse continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of his people. Mari Sandoz offers a powerful evocation of the long-ago world and enduring spirit of Crazy Horse. Chosen as a 2007 One Book, One Nebraska selection, this edition of Crazy Horse includes discussion questions and a comprehensive glossary to enhance the reader's experience with this classic Sandoz text. Mari Sandoz (1896-1966) is the noted author of Cheyenne Autumn, Old Jules, and The Battle of the Little Bighorn (all available in Bison Books editions). Vine Deloria, Jr. (1933-2005) is the author of many books, including Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto and Red Earth, White Lies: Native Americans and the Myth of Scientific Fact. "Here is a glorious hero tale told with beauty and power . . . the story of a great American."ÑJohn G. Neihardt, New York Times "[One] of the great stories of the West, and written . . . in the spirit of the sages, with a scrupulous regard for truth and history."ÑAtlantic Monthly "This history of the Oglala Indian Crazy Horse is a splendidly done thing. [Sandoz] gives a magnificent picture of the Plains Indian civilization."ÑWashington Star The urge to shape political policy and attitudes by capturing an aura of her subjects is best exemplified by Sandoz's passionate intensity in the writing of the book Crazy Horse." ÑMary Dixon, Great Plains Quarterly "This book is an unflinching eye opener to the barbarism perpetrated against the Lakota, and the recompense (or rather lack of it) that ensued."ÑByron Peterson, Nebraska Report

5 DELORIA, JR. VINE. Custer Died For Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto.
University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 1988. s Softcover. Brand new book.
In his new preface to this quality paperback edition, the author observes, "The Indian world has changed so substantially since the first publication of this book that some things contained in it seem new again." Indeed, it seems that each generation of whites and Indians will have to read and reread Vine Deloria's Manifesto for some time to come, before we absorb his special, ironic Indian point of view and what he tells us, with a great deal of humor, about U.S. race relations, federal bureaucracies, Christian churches, and social scientists. This book continues to be required reading for all Americans, whatever their special interest. "[Deloria] writes with ironic, mordant wit and, in the process, he resolutely destroys the stereotypes and myths that white society has built up about the Indian." - Newsweek "He's more interested in results than in being tactful. Nauseated by the traditional Indian image, he asserts the worth if not the dignity of the redman and blasts the political, social, and religious forces that perpetuate the Little Big Horn and wigwam stereotyping of his people." - Best Sellers "[Deloria] is perceptive in his analysis of the difference between Indian problems and those of blacks and other minority groups, and his commentary on Indian affairs is enlightening." - Library Journal

6 FORTUNATE EAGLE, ADAM & FINDLEY, TIM; DELORIA, JR., VINE (FOREWORD. Heart Of The Rock: The Indian Invasion Of Alcatraz.
University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 2002. s Softcover. Brand new book.
In 1969, Ricahrd Oakes and Adam Fortunate Eagle, then known as Adam Nordwall, instigated an invasion of Alcatraz by American Indians. From the mainland, Fortunate Eagle orchestrated the events, but they assumed an uncontrollable life of their own. Fortunate Eagle provides an intimate memoir of the occupation and the events leading up to it. Accompanied by a variety of photographs capturing the people, places, and actions involved, Heart of the Rock brings these turbulent times vividly to life. From the start, public support was strong. Money poured in from around the country. Sausalito sailors and their "navy" transported supplies and people to the island. San Francisco restaurants sent Thanksgiving dinner. A school was started; chores and responsibilities were shared by everyone. Alcatraz became home, and American Indians of all tribes became a family. But the occupation lasted two years, and Oakes, who had become its spokesman, left after his stepdaughter's death on the island. Memoranda from the White House recommended doing "anything" to turn the public against the occupation so it could be ended. Water and electricity were cut off, reports of conflict on the island began appearing in the press, and suspicious fires burned five buildings. Nevertheless, the occupation of Alcatraz remains what historian Vine Deloria, Jr. has called "perhaps the most significant Indian action since the Little Bighorn." Vine Deloria, Jr., Professor of Political Science at the University of Arizona, is the author of a number of books and articles on events affecting the lives of American Indians. He serves as the Executive Director of the National Congress of American Indians and is an active spokesman and leader for the American Indian community throughout the nation. Adam Fortunate Eagle, an enrolled member of the Ojibwe Nation, is the author of Heart of the Rock: The Indian Invasion of Alcatraz. He currently resides on the Fallon Indian Reservation in Nevada. "The text covers some of the nuts and boltsÑbut mostly it spotlights the men, women, and children who saw in the Alcatraz invasion a chance to speak out to the world. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Native American history." - Booklist "Fortunate Eagle's witty and impassioned recollections will be appreciated by anyone interested in American history or the political upheavals of the 1960's." - Publishers Weekly

8 GEORGE-KANENTIIO, DOUGLAS M.; DELORIA, JR., VINE (FOREWORD). Iroquois On Fire: A Voice From The Mohawk Nation.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2008. s Softcover. Brand new book.
In their homelands in what is now New York state, the Iroquois have assumed a prominent role in public debate as residents of the region seek ways to resolve multibillion-dollar land claims. The initial dispute over territorial title has grown to encompass gambling, treaties, taxation, and what it means to claim Native sovereignty. Written from an Iroquois perspective, Iroquois on Fire is an in-depth study of the historical and social issues raised during the Iroquois' long struggle over disputed territorial titles. Douglas M. George-Kanentiio, a member of the Mohawk Nation and an activist for Native American claims, details the history of his nation from initial contact with the Europeans through the casino crises. As a key figure in the events of the last two decades, he uses his personal story to highlight issues of public interest: the land, family and community, geography, federal interference in tribal affairs, religion, political activism, land use/claims, and connections to organized crime. Though the story he tells is important in and of itself, it is rendered even more so because the interaction between New York and the Iroquois will surely affect the ways in which other states and the Natives who live in them address similar issues. Douglas M. George-Kanentiio was born and raised in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. An award-winning writer and journalist, he has served the Mohawk Nation in numerous capacities, including as a land-claims negotiator, a cofounder of Radio CKON, and the editor of the news journal Akwesasne Notes. He is the author of the books Iroquois Culture and Commentary and the coauthor of Skywoman: Legends of the Iroquois. Vine Deloria Jr. (1933-2005) is the author of more than twenty books, including Custer Died for Your Sins, God Is Red, and We Talk, You Listen: New Tribes, New Turf, available in a Bison Books edition. "George-Kanentiio, a Mohawk journalist, tells from firsthand experience what forces have conspired to pull the Iroquois apart as a culture, a confederacy, and within each component nation. Christianity and the hegemonic policies of the US and Canada are to blame, but also the greed of Iroquois individuals. Rather than heeding the Code of Handsome Lake, developed in the 1800s, or the modern wisdom of Ray Fadden, some Iroquois in the 1980s sought personal wealth and local autonomy through gambling operations. . . . In 1990, when Mohawks, including the author and his relatives at Akwesasne, tried to stop casinos in their territory, self-proclaimed warriors met them with violence, to which they responded in kind. Two men died. The author was accused and acquitted in one count of second-degree murder. The book's warning is heartfelt and compelling. Highly recommended."ÑChoice "Former Cherokee Nation Chief Wilma Mankiller calls Iroquois on Fire 'an extraordinary description of the struggles, conflict and determination of traditional people.' . . . If you are interested in contemporary issues among Native Americans, this book gives them to you, intimately and with passion."ÑConnecticut Post Online "Iroquois on Fire is a profound and courageous work.... In this book, the author has set the stage for those with the courage and honor to no longer be passive observers or victims, but instead to take the stage and write the future. I recommend this book to all who can read."ÑLeslie Lo Baugh

9 DELORIA, ELLA; DELORIA, JR., VINE (INTRODUCTION). Speaking Of Indians.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 1998. s Softcover. Brand new book.
Ella Deloria could speak intimately about Indian ways because she belonged to a Yankton Sioux family. A distinguished scholar who studied with Franz Boas at Columbia University, she had the gift of language and the understanding necessary to bridge races. Originally published in 1944, this book is an important source of information about Dakota culture and a classic in its elegant clarity of insight. Beginning with a general discussion of American Indian origins, language families, and culture areas, Deloria then focuses on her own people, the Dakotas, and the intricate kinship system that governed all aspects of their life. She writes, "Exacting and unrelenting obedience to kinship demands made the Dakotas a most kind, unselfish people, always acutely aware of those about them and innately courteous." Deloria goes on to show the painful transition to reservations and how the holdover of the kinship system worked against Indians trying to follow white notions of progress and success. Her ideas about what both races must do to participate fully in American life are as cogent now as when they were first written. Ella Deloria, born in 1889 on the Yankton Reservation, spent her childhood on the Standing Rock Reservation. Her writings include Dakota Texts, Dakota Grammar (a collaboration with Boas), and Waterlily (also a Bison Book). Introducer Vine Deloria Jr. is the author of Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto and other books. "Deloria has exposed the reader to her view points on topics such as sovereignty, treaties, Native languages, Sioux culture, Christianity and Native religions and Indian boarding schools. . . . Deloria's age and life experiences have positioned her as a liaison between her people and the rest of the world."ÑMosaic
