The magnificent portraits of North American Indians collected in this volume were taken on three expeditions sponsored by John Wanamaker by the photographer Joseph Dixon. These remarkable character studies exist on 11,000 glass plates held by the William Hammond Mathers Museum. Originally intended to document what was considered to be a vanishing race, these acute portraits have come to serve as a testimony to the continuing vitality of Native Americans and their traditions. They are published here for the first time with a commentary by the museum's curator.
