RUBIN, GAIL. Psalmist With A Camera: Photographs Of A Biblical Safari. Abbeville Press, New York: 1979. 0896590763 / 9780896590762 h Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition. Photography, like all art, expands our vision. As the psalmist sang praise with words, Gail Rubin used her camera to capture her vision of the beauty and inner harmony she saw in the flora and fauna of Israel. When she set forth on what she would later describe as a "biblical safari" to photograph all the birds and animals mentioned in the Bible and still present in the Holy Land, she began to acquaint herself with the source for her project, the Hebrew Scriptures. She was fascinated by the discovery of "an awareness, present thousands of years ago, of the same problem that confronts us today; that of therelationship between man, wildlife, and the environment. The ancients had both an appreciation of nature and an understsanding of the balance necessary between man and wild animal." Her efforts were rewarded two years later when the Jewish Museum in New York City mounted her show titled "Birds of Heaven, Beasts of the Field, the Bible as Source." This exhibition serves as the basis for this book. Price:
