She married, as a young girl, the Marquis D'Aiglemont, who deceived very soon the romantic dreams of Julie. While the Marquis wasn't understanding his wife's languidness, Lord Grenville, an English noble and doctor, managed to cure Julie from her neurosis and be loved by her. Volume V also includes five short stories.

Now there's only one point to settle: the marriage contract. The young people prefer this matter to be discussed between their respective notaries. Modeste Mignon involves three men, a duke, a lawyer, and a poet, who wage a courtship contest for a young lady's hand. Volume VI also includes two short stories.

From this novel emerges one of Balzac's central themes - sacrifice in love: sacrifice of happiness, of wealth, of health, even of life. There, he endures the sufferings of the would-be poet whose talent is not recognized, and the humiliation of the lover who is dismissed by a woman of higher nobility. After sacrificing his artistic aspirations, he rapidly rises to fame and wealth as a critic for local newspapers. Soon he also is rewarded with the love of a young promising actress.

Years later, Henriette realizes what she has given up by her foolish constancy, but by then it is too late, and she dies of a broken heart. The Country Doctor tells of a mediocre painter who finally succeeds by marrying a wealthy art collector's daughter and endearing himself to the same influential people that most of his fellow artists despise. Volume IX also includes three short stories.
