9 JOYCE, JAMES. Dubliners.
Viking, New York: December 1965. Seventeenth Printing. s Softcover. Good, clean reading copy.
Dubliners was completed in 1905, but a series of British and Irish publishers and printers found it offensive and immoral, and it was suppressed. The book finally came out in London in 1914, just as Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man began to appear in the journal Egoist under the auspices of Ezra Pound. The first three stories in Dubliners might be incidents from a draft of Portrait of the Artist, and many of the characters who figure in Ulysses have their first appearance here.

15 JOYCE, JAMES. Dubliners.
Penguin Books, Harmondsworth: 1982. 0140062858 / 9780140062854 Centennial Edition. s Softcover. Good condition.
The remarkable collection of stories that make up Dubliners was described by Joyce himself as a series of chapters in the moral history of his community; and, according to Harry Levin, the arrangement of the tales reveals "a progression from childhood to maturity, broadening from private to public scope." In June 1914, after nine years of effor on Joyce's part, the first edition of Dubliners was published. A few critical responses to the book foreshadowed more sympathetic attention in the years to come. G. E. Moore called the "The Dead" "perfection," and Yeats wrote of the stories that they showed "the promise of a great novelist, and a great novelist of a new kind."

The Viking Press, New York: 1959. 0670000450 / 9780670000456 Viking Compass Edition. Eighth printing. s Softcover. Reading copy.
A story with no real beginning or end (it ends in the middle of a sentence and begins in the middle of the same sentence), this "book of Doublends Jined" is as remarkable for its prose as for its circular structure. Written in a fantastic dream-language, forged from polyglot puns and portmanteau words, the Wake features some of Joyce's most hilarious characters: the Irish barkeep Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker, Shem the Penman, Shaun the Postman, and Anna Livia Plurabelle. "It will drug, excite, bedazzle or annoy you according to your taste and your capacity." - Washington D.C., News
