6 PEARSON, ELIZABETH WARE; MCPHERSON, JAMES M. (NEW PREFACE). Letters From Port Royal 1862-1868.
Arno Press with The New York Times, New York: 1969. Reprint Edition. s Softcover. Good condition considering its age.
Port Royal Island, South Carolina, held ten thousand slaves whose liberation during the United States Civil War led to a test called "The Port Royal Experiment." The cotton plantations which these slaves had worked were abandoned by the white population when the Union Army and Navy captured them in November 1861. The black men still on the Island were no longer slaves, but not free men either. Northern abolitionists and philanthropists called for an experiment there, in order to prove how freedom for black men could and would work, first at Port Royal and then throughout the nation. In the year following the departure of the slaveholders, abolitionist missionaries and schoolteachers called "Gideonites" arrived on the Island to establish schools and set themselves up as superintendents of the black laborers, who were now receiving wages. Most of the letters written here were written by four of the Gideonites. They illustrate the selfishness and pettiness, as well as the devotion and self-sacrifice, that characterized the efforts of white liberals to help the newly-freed blacks. Includes an Index.
