Autobiographical in origin, this is the story of an English coal-mining family at the turn of the century and particularly concerns the coming of age of one son, Paul. The relationships of this family group prefigure the famous Lawrence leitmotiv of the eternal struggle for sexual power. The dominant, unsatisfied wife and mother and the ineffectual husband and father personify this battle; and her unconscious arrogation of the children's affection and support, especially as this affects the personality of Paul, dramatizes the influences of the unsatisfied, unfulfilled mother on her progeny.
