1 MILLER, ALICE LYMAN & WICH, RICHARD. Becoming Asia: Change And Continuity In Asian International Relations Since World War II.
Stanford University Press, Palo Alto: 2011. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
At the conclusion of World War II, Asia was hardly more than a geographic expression. Yet today we recognize Asia as a vibrant and assertive region, fully transformed from the vulnerable nation-states that emerged following the Second World War. The transformation was by no means an inevitable one, but the product of two key themes that have dominated Asia's international relations since 1945: the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to enlist the region's states as assets in the Cold War, and the struggle of nationalistic Asian leaders to develop the domestic support to maintain power and independence in a dangerous international context. Becoming Asia provides a comprehensive, systemic account of how these themes played out in Asian affairs during the postwar years, covering not only East Asia, but South and Central Asia as well. In addition to exploring the interplay between nationalism and Cold War bipolarity during the first postwar decades, authors Alice Lyman Miller and Richard Wich chart the rise of largely export-led economies that are increasingly making the region the global center of gravity, and document efforts in the ongoing search for regional integration. The book also traces the origins and evolution of deep-rooted issues that remain high on the international agenda, such as the Taiwan question, the division of Korea and the threat of nuclear proliferation, the Kashmir issue, and the nuclearized Indian-Pakistani conflict, and offers an account of the rise of China and its implications for regional and global security and prosperity. Primary documents excerpted throughout the textÑsuch as leaders' talks and speeches, international agreements, secret policy assessmentsÑenrich accounts of events, offering readers insight into policymakers' assumptions and perceptions at the time. Alice Lyman Miller is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and teaches at Stanford University and the United States Naval Postgraduate School. She is the founding editor of the Hoover Institution's China Leadership Monitor and author of Science and Dissent in Post-Mao China (1996). Richard Wich has extensive government and academic experience in Communist and Asian affairs. He is a visiting scholar at John Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies and is the author of Sino-Soviet Crisis Politics (1980). "This elegant synthesis of the major events and their interactions in the extraordinarily complex international politics of Asia after WWII is an important contribution. Tailor made for advanced courses on the history of Asian international relations, its readability and narrative structure also offer the general reader access to a historical perspective on a region that is transforming the world today."ÑCarla Freeman, PhD, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies "Alice Lyman Miller and Richard Wich have done a great service in this thorough and thoughtful volume. The historical depth, detailed analysis, and broad geographic scope of Becoming Asia put it in a class by itself among the fine surveys of Asian international relations in the last century."ÑRobert Sutter, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University At the conclusion of World War II, Asia was hardly more than a geographic expression. 6 MILLER, RICHARD F. Harvard's Civil War: A History Of The Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
University Press of New England: 2005. 1584655054 / 9781584655053 Uncorrected Proof. s Softcover. Good condition.
A regimental history of one of the Civil War's most distinguished units. The Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was one of the most influential northern units in the Army of the Potomac. Its nickname, the Harvard Regiment, was derived from the preponderance of Crimson-connected officers on its roster. The fortunes of war placed this unit at the lethal crossroads of nearly every major battle of the Army of the Potomac from Ball's Bluff (1861) through Grant's Overland Campaign. After going through its baptismal fire at the debacle of Ball's Bluff, the Harvard Regiment was the first to plant its colors on the Confederate works at Yorktown; fought McClellan's rear guard actions during the Seven Days' Campaign; was mauled in Antietam's West Woods, on Fredericksburg's streets, and on Marye's Heights; faced Pickett's charge at Gettysburg; and was at the deadly intersection of the Orange and Plank Roads at the Battle of the Wilderness. But the regiment's influence far transcended its battle itinerary. Its officers were drawn from elite circles of New England politics, literature, and commerce. This was the regiment of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.; of his cousins, William Lowell Putnam and James Jackson Lowell, both nephews of James Russell Lowell; of Paul Joseph Revere and his brother Edward H. R. Revere, both grandsons of Paul Revere; and of Sumner Paine, great-grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Robert Treat Paine. Because its officers were highly educated, many of the Harvard Regiment left copious collections of diaries, memoirs, and letters, many published. Yet the history of the Twentieth Massachusetts comprises a social document beyond the evocative and tragic recollections of its highly literate leadership. Although the Boston elite dominated the regiment's officer corps, half of its recruits were immigrants, mostly German and Irish. The ethnic tension that dogged the regiment during its existence reflected an uneasy mix. The regiment included Copperhead and abolitionist gentlemen, radical German ŽmigrŽs from the failed Revolution of 1848, the sons of prominent Republicans, and the sons of Lincoln-haters. Miller adroitly weaves a social history of the period into his narrative, offering readers a fascinating backdrop that enriches vivid descriptions of battlefield triumphs and catastrophes. The influence of the Harvard regiment continued to reverberate long after the war. Commemorated in poems, speeches and histories by such distinguished figures as Herman Melville and John Greenleaf Whittier,

8 MILLER, RICHARD F. In Words And Deeds: Battle Speeches In History.
University Press of New England, Hanover: 2008. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
The first-ever survey of inspirational battle speeches from Greco-Roman times to the present. Throughout recorded military history, leaders have persuaded men to risk life and limb for God, country, unit, comrades, and families; for plunder, vengeance, glory, a lasting peace, or new conquests. Beginning with the holy wars of the Hebrew Bible and continuing to the present Iraq conflict, one constant motivator of men in war has been the battle speech: the exhortatory words uttered by commanders on the eve of invasions and before, during, after, and between battles. In Greco-Roman times, battle speeches, as recorded (or invented) by historians such as Herodotus, Thucydides, and Livy were considered literary creations of a high order. In the centuries that followed, both biblical and Greco-Roman narratives established the templates that have influenced military exhortations to the present day. Emotions inspired by the battle speech might be universal, but conceptions of God, the rules of war, and the proper objects of warfare have evolved to reflect changes in cultural norms, military organization, and technology. Richard F. Miller offers the first systemic classification of battle speeches while exploring how their contents have changed over time. Speeches are classified based on their chronological relation to the battle or tactical circumstance the speaker seeks to address. In many situations, deeds accompany words in a continuum of action that renders both action and words inseparable. Thus, Miller often analyzes both components in a battle sequence. In Words and Deeds relies chiefly on primary texts written either by soldier-participants, or, in the case of the Hebrew Bible and certain Greco-Roman accounts, the most important surviving texts of the ancient wars. For modern European and American military history, the sources are almost exclusively first-hand accounts contained in soldiers' diaries, letters, after-action reports, and memoirs. Secondary sources are used to extract first-hand accounts of words and deeds or to support conclusions about how such speeches have evolved. Richard F. Miller is the author of Harvard's Civil War: The History of the Twentieth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (2005) and A Carrier At War: On Board the USS Kitty Hawk in the Iraq War (2005) and co-author (with Robert F. Mooney) of The Civil War: The Nantucket Experience (1994). A Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Miller is a graduate of Harvard and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. "Richard Miller has compiled a superb and unique collection of battle speeches in his work In Words and Deeds. These are inspiring words that capture the emotion and historical importance of powerful moments before and during battle. This outstanding book is a must-read for all that want to understand those moments in a way the dry reading of historical facts can never convey."ÑGeneral Anthony C. Zinni, USMC (Ret.) "Drawing upon the history of warfare from the earliest recorded conflicts to the present day, In Word and Deeds masterfully analyzes speech as an enhancer of military power. This book will serve as a valuable guide in the hands of anyone seeking to motivate a group for combat or any other daunting enterprise."ÑMark Moyar, author of Triumph Forsaken: The Vietnam War, 1954-1965 "An essential component of leadership too often neglected. This book should be studiedÑand practicedÑby all who command soldiers under stress."ÑBing West, author of The Strongest Tribe: War, Politics, and the Endgame in Iraq "Richard Miller's book In Words and Deeds captures the essence of historical and significant battle speeches and how those words inspired men into battle. In my military career, I had the opportunity to hear and follow great and eloquent communicators who had vision and clarity of mission. Men in battle are led through words and deeds of their higher and lower level commanders and leaders that instill discipline and focus. I commend Mr. Miller in this important literary work that clearly explains words and deeds experienced on our historical battlefields."ÑMajor General Paul E. Vallely, USA (Ret.), host of Stand Up America
