SHAPIRO, SIDNEY. I Chose China. Hippocrene Books, New York: 078180759X / 9780781807593 h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Armed with the limited conversational Chinese he learned in the U.S. Army during World War II, Sidney Shapiro, a New York lawyer, arrives in Shanghai in 1947 for "a look around." He ends up spending the rest of his life in China. A foreigner in an alien land, he falls in love with Phoenix, a Chinese beauty and active revolutionary. Entranced by Chinese culture and society, he gradually becomes deeply and personally involved in highly dramatic developmentsÑthe defeat of the Chiang Kai-shek dictatorship and the establishment of the People's Republic, Land Reform, the Korean War, the break with the Soviet Union, the war in Vietnam, communes and the Big Leap Forward, the "Cultural Revolution," the Tiananmen square protest, economic reforms, the opening to the West, and troubled U.S.-China relations. Through it all runs the theme of an unusual loveÑfor a Phoenix and a Dragon. Phoenix, Sidney Shapiro's marriage partner of nearly 50 years, teaches him to appreciate the Chinese Dragon. His understanding of the Chinese Dragon intensifies his love for the charming, tempestuous Phoenix. The small bobbing craft of Shapiro's personal, intellectual, and emotional development is swept along on the surging socio-political tides of the last half of the twentieth century. At the age of eighty-plus, after more than fifty years in China, Sidney Shapiro has been able to see the whole pictureÑand savor it to the hilt. Speaking from an inside vantage not available to many, he tells a warmly fond yet coolly objective story of his adopted land. Price:

SHAPIRO, SIDNEY. Jews In Old China. Hippocrene Books, New York: 0781808332 / 9780781808330 s Softcover. Brand new book. The accidental discovery in the 17th century of a Jewish community in the city of Kaifeng, and the findings there by Jesuit missionaries, marked the beginning of widespread interest in the subject of Jews in China. In the centuries that followed, Western Sinologists arrived in China and engaged in a variety of investigations. In the 1f980s, however, Sidney Shapiro, a former New York lawyer who has lived half a century in Beijing, felt that "there was a crying need to learn what the Chinese scholars themselves have to say about the history of Jews in China." With that in mind, he compiled the remarkable fruits of research conducted by Chinese social scientists, and edited and translated them into English. Jews in Old China was originally published by Hippocrene Books in 1984 with considerable success. It was then translated into Hebrew and published in Israel in 1987. This newly expanded edition offers a rich exposition, according to the Chinese investigations, on the origins of these Jewish migrantsÑwhen and why they came, the routes they followed, where they settled, and descriptions of their religious and social lives under the Hans, the Mongols, and the Manchus. This book provides a wealth of information about the conflicts, contributions, adaptation and ultimate assimilation of the Jews in China. It also introduces, from the Chinese perspective, the Radanites, the great medieval Jewish mercantile traders, who provided an important link between China and the West. Price:
