10 BIKESNOBNYC. Bike Snob: Systematically & Mercilessly Realigning The World Of Cycling.
Chronicle Books, San Francisco: 2010. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
Cycling is exploding in a good way. Urbanites everywhere, from ironic hipsters to earth-conscious commuters, are taking to the bike like aquatic mammals to water. Cycling's most prolific, well-known, hilarious, and anonymous blogger brings a fresh and humorous perspective to the most important vehicle to hit personal transportation since the horse. Bike Snob treats readers to a laugh-out-loud rant and rave about the world of bikes and their riders, and offers a unique look at the ins and outs of cycling, from its history and hallmarks to its wide range of bizarre practitioners. Throughout, the author lampoons the missteps, pretensions, and absurdities of bike culture while maintaining a contagious enthusiasm for cycling itself. Bike Snob is an essential volume for anyone who knows, is, or wants to become a cyclist. 5 x 7 inches; 208 pages; 2-color line drawings throughout, full-color photo insert. BikeSnobNYC is a frequent racer, daily commuter, and former bike messenger himself. He has been published and profiledin numerous publications, including the New York Times, Outside, and Bicycling Magazine. Bike Snob should be lovingly gifted to all new cyclers - and forcefully smacked against the heads of all the jaded know-it-alls who take the sport way too seriously. -- Bill Strickland, Editor-at-Large of Bicycling As any avid biker will attest, cycling isnít just a form of transportation. Itís a complicated culture with its own slang, taxonomy, and preferred tat styles. If you havenít read Bike Snob, you should consider reattaching those training wheels to your overpriced fixie. --Robert Lanham, author of The Hipster Handbook After reading Bike Snob I put a brake on my fixie, started wearing a helmet, then punched myself in the stomach for spending so much time as a stupid hipster. This is a social manual that should be bundled with every bike shipped in America. --Christian Lander, author of Stuff White People Like I like to think I know a thing or two (or three) about being ruthless and relentless - either trying to win the Tour or fighting cancer. The Snob knows it too. Keeping us dorks in line is tough work. I take pleasure in getting picked on by the Snob, slightly more pleasure in reading his writing, but take the most pleasure punishing his ass (my payback) on the bike either in Central Park or on 9W/River Road. Long live the Snob. --Lance Armstrong First youíll think the Snob is funny. Then youíll think heís smart. Eventually youíll probably think that heís seen far too many movies for his own good. At some point during this book, however, youíre going to say to yourself: ĎHoly crap. He is right.í Believe me, that is one disconcerting moment. --Elden "Fatty" Nelson, fatcyclist.com

11 BLODGETT, PETER J. Motoring West: Volume 1: Automobile Pioneers, 1900-1909.
University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 2015. s Softcover. Brand new book.
In the first years of the twentieth century, motoring across the vast expanses west of the Mississippi was at the very least an adventure and at most an audacious stunt. As more motorists ventured forth, such travel became a curiosity and, within a few decades, commonplace. For aspiring western travelers, automobiles formed an integral part of their search for new experiences and destinations—and like explorers and thrill seekers from earlier ages, these adventurers kept records of their experiences. The scores of articles, pamphlets, and books they published, collected for the first time in Motoring West, create a vibrant picture of the American West in the age of automotive ascendancy, as viewed from behind the wheel. Documenting the very beginning of Americans' love affair with the automobile, the pieces in this volume—the first of a planned multivolume series—offer a panorama of motoring travelers' visions of the burgeoning West in the first decade of the twentieth century. Historian Peter J. Blodgett's sources range from forgotten archives to company brochures to magazines such as Harper's Monthly, Sunset, and Outing. Under headlines touting adventures in "touring," "land cruising," and "camping out with an automobile," voices from motoring's early days instruct, inform, and entertain. They chart routes through "wild landscapes," explain the finer points of driving coast to coast in a Franklin, and occasionally prescribe "touring outfits." Blodgett's engaging introductions to the volume and each piece couch the writers' commentaries within their time. As reports of the region's challenges and pleasures stirred interest and spurred travel, the burgeoning flow of traffic would eventually and forever alter the western landscape and the westering motorist's experience. The dispatches in Motoring West illustrate not only how the automobile opened the American West before 1909 to more and more travelers, but also how the West began to change with their arrival. Peter J. Blodgett is the H. Russell Smith Foundation Curator of Western American Manuscripts at the Huntington Library and author of Land of Golden Dreams: California in the Gold Rush Decade, 1848-1858. "Peter Blodgett's Motoring West, covering the period 1900 to 1909, includes accounts of automotive travel in the trans-Mississippi West by such able and eloquent guides as Hamlin Garland and William Dix. But the most effective guide of all is Blodgett, whose superb introduction to the volume—and to each carefully made selection—is a valuable roadmap through the existing scholarship on American automotive tourism in the first half of the twentieth century. This book should find its place on the shelf of everyone interested in the cultural history of the modern West, and in the glove box of every contemporary automotive traveler who wonders what the journeying experience was like a century ago."—David M. Wrobel, author of Global West, American Frontier: Travel, Empire, and Exceptionalism from Manifest Destiny to the Great Depression "Peter Blodgett's Motoring West is a TripTik through the enthusiasm, past the awe, over the excitement, and around the challenge experienced by the first automotive pioneers into the beckoning West. Thoughtfully assembled and skillfully introduced, this book re-illuminates the romance of the road that so seduced early twentieth-century Americans."—Terence Young, author of Building San Francisco's Parks, 1850-1930

20 CALLEN, ZACHARY. Railroads And American Political Development: Infrastructure, Federalism, And State Building.
University Press of Kansas, Lawrence: 2016. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
America's founders envisioned a federal government of limited and enumerated powers. What they could not envision, of course, was the vast and complex infrastructure that the growing nation would demand—a demand that became ever clearer as the power and importance of railroads emerged. The requirements of a nationwide rail network, it also became clear, far exceeded the resources of state and local government and private industry. The consequences, as seen in this book, amounted to state building from the ground up. In Railroads and American Political Development Zachary Callen tells the story of the federal government's role in developing a national rail system—and the rail system's role in expanding the power of the federal government. The book reveals how state building, so often attributed to an aggressive national government, can also result from local governments making demands on the national state—a dynamic that can still be seen at work every time the US Congress takes up a transportation bill. Though many states invested in their local railroads, and many quite successfully, others were less willing or less capable—so rail development necessarily became a federal concern. Railroads and American Political Development shows how this led to the Land Grant Act of 1850, a crucial piece of legislation in the building of both the nation's infrastructure and the American state. Chronicling how this previously local issue migrated to the federal state, and how federal action then altered American rail planning, the book offers a new perspective on the exact nature of federalism. In the case of rail development, we see how state governments factor into the American state building process, and how, in turn, the separation of powers at the federal level shaped that process. The result is a fresh view of the development of the American rail system, as well as a clearer picture of the pressures and political logic that have altered and expanded the reach of American federalism. Zachary Callen is assistant professor of political science at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. "Zachary Callen deftly probes the interface between federalism and the emergence of the railroad system in the antebellum era. He carefully traces the gradual shift away from state-centered railroad policy, pointing out that difficulties in promoting and coordinating railroads were common and induced western states to take the lead in calling for federal assistance. This volume casts welcome light on the nascent movement for federal control of the rail network and raises far-reaching questions about the nature of federalism in the American constitutional order."—James W. Ely Jr, author of Railroads and American Law "We know a lot about American national state building. But Callen tells a story that puts the states and federalism front and center. It's a refreshing perspective on how national capacities are built through the actions and inactions of other levels and branches of government." —Patricia Strach, Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Administration & Policy, University at Albany
