1 Defending National Treasures: French Art And Heritage Under Vichy.
Stanford University Press, Palo Alto: 2011. Karlsgodt, Elizabeth Campbell. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
Defending National Treasures explores the fate of art and cultural heritage during the Nazi occupation of France. The French cultural patrimony was a crucial locus of power struggles between German and French leaders and among influential figures in each country. Karlsgodt examines the preservation policy that the Vichy regime enacted in an assertion of sovereignty over French art museums, historic monuments, and archeological sites. The limits to this sovereignty are apparent from German appropriations of public statues, Jewish-owned art collections, and key "Germanic" works of art from French museums. A final chapter traces the lasting impact of the French wartime reforms on preservation policy. In Defending National Treasures, Karlsgodt introduces the concept of patrimania to reveal examples of opportunism in art preservation. During the war, French officials sought to acquire coveted artwork from Jewish collections for the Louvre and other museums; in the early postwar years, they established a complicated guardianship over unclaimed art recovered from Germany. A cautionary tale for our own times, Defending National Treasures examines the ethical dimensions of museum acquisitions in the ongoing noble quest to preserve great works of art. Elizabeth Campbell Karlsgodt is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Denver. "This book makes several critical arguments, including a strongly documented case for continuity in French cultural policy from the Third Republic through Vichy and the postwar years. Karlsgodt shows that French cultural policy during the Occupation must be understood more in terms of domestic interests than as a function of collaboration with the Germans. She raises important ethical questions about museum acquisitions policies, not only in Vichy France, but also in postwar France and elsewhere."—Bertram Gordon, Mills College

11 BEGAG, AZOUZ; HARGREAVES, ALEC (INTRODUCTION & TRANSLATION FROM THE FRENCH). Ethnicity And Equality: France In The Balance.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2007. First English Language Edition. s Softcover. Brand new book.
In the fall of 2005 the streets of France were rocked by civil disturbances on a scale unseen for decades. Only months earlier Azouz Begag, France's first minister for equal opportunities and first-ever cabinet minister of North African immigrant origin, wrote an essay laying bare the festering social and ethnic injustices that, as can now be seen in hindsight, led to the riots. This essay, published here for the first time, brilliantly documents the socioeconomic inequalities, ethnic discrimination, and political neglect that have bred a volatile generation of minority ethnic youths deeply distrustful of a society they believe has failed them. Blending autobiography with sociological and political analysis, Begag shows how social peace in France depends on transforming these disaffected youths into galvanized citizens. His insights into the malaise of France's urban ghettos offer lessons for developed countries throughout the world—and hope for the similar challenges they face. Azouz Begag, widely acclaimed as both a novelist and as a researcher at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) prior to his appointment as minister for equal opportunities in 2005, is the author of more than twenty books, including his autobiographical novel, Shantytown Kid, available in a Bison Books edition. Alec G. Hargreaves is Ada Belle Winthrop-King Professor of French and the director of the Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies at Florida State University. "The political and ideological challenges of reconciling republicanism with the demands of diversity are well illustrated by Azouz Begag's fine study, Ethnicity and Equality: France in the Balance."—Richard Wolin, The Nation "Ethnicity and Equality is a powerful book which should be read by all those that are interested in issues of race, racism and multiracialism to understand its constraints and bottlenecks to a fully integrated society."—Mwelwa C. Musambachime, International Journal of World Peace "Azouz Begag offers a compelling analysis of the unrest in the urban banlieues of the past thirty years and calls for changes in the failed 'French model of integration.' Alec Hargreaves's seamless translation and incisive introduction frame Begag's groundbreaking study and blueprint for ethnic harmony."—Christopher P. Pinet, editor in chief of the French Review "A witty, humorous and at the same time profound and moving analysis of the current situation in crisis-ridden areas of French cities which not only presents facts but also proposes sound and reasonable solutions."—Professor Dina Sherzer, Department of French and Italian, University of Texas at Austin "This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the challenges posed by living in an increasingly globalized world in which the accompanying cultural, religious, social, and political transformations force us to rethink our own identity."—Dominic Thomas, author of Black France: Colonialism, Immigration, and Transnationalism

18 BOULDREY, BRIAN. Honorable Bandit: A Walk Across Corsica.
Terrace Books, Madison: 2007. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
Crossing the unmappable scrub of Corsica, on the paths of bandits and patriots. Brian Bouldrey traveled to the island of Corsica, with its wine-dark Mediterranean waters, powdered-sugar beach sand, and a cuisine and wines fit for the rich. And then he walked away from all of them. Bouldrey strapped on a backpack and walked across Napoleon's native land with the same spirit many choose to dance or drink: to celebrate, to mourn, to think, to avoid thinking, to recall, to ignore, to escape, and to arrive. This wonderfully textured account of a two-week ramble along a famous Corsican hiking trail with his German friend Petra (she was good at the downhills while he was better at the uphills) offers readers a journal that is a launching point for reflection: thoughts on cultural differences, friendship, physical challenge, personal challenge, and getting very, very lost. Part travelogue, part memoir, and part lampoon, this book offers readers an impressionistic view of a little talked about yet stunningly beautiful landscape. "Reading Honorable Bandit, you enter not just another country but also the secret door into Brian Bouldrey's head, and that is the real fun, living inside this wonderful, wonderful writer with his sly humor and infectious tenderness for the world. I smiled or laughed out loud at every page. As often, I was moved by the author's poignant meditations. I didn't want the book to ever end."-Sharman Apt Russell, author of Hunger: An Unnatural History and An Obsession with Butterflies "Bouldrey's language is beautiful and pitch perfect; his story is deeply moving, wrenching sometimes, but always funny and uplifting and layered with an exquisite care. Take this pilgrimage with Bouldrey; you will be a better person for it." -Chris Abani, author of The Virgin Flames and Gracelan Brian Bouldrey has written six books and edited six anthologies, including three volumes of Best American Gay Fiction. His edited collection Wrestling with the Angel: Faith and Religion in the Lives of Gay Men won a Lambda Literary Award and his memoir Monster: Adventures in American Machismo was a Lambda finalist. He is the author of the novel The Boom Economy: Or, Scenes from Clerical Life, also published by the University of Wisconsin Press. He teaches creative writing at Northwestern University.
