The poems in this book, which Hughes put together just before his death, were born of the racial dilemma that rocked the United States in the 1950s and 1960s; Hughes wrote of freedom marches, sit-ins, speeches, prayers, violence, and nonviolence, from Alabama to Harlem; he told of a tragedy in Birmingham and a death in Yorkville. Forty-four of the poems are new, and the remaining twenty-six, which were drawn from previous books, take on new significance in this collection.
(Key Words: Poetry, Poems, Langston Hughes, African Americans, Negros, Freedom, Sit-ins, Speeches, Prayers, Violence, Blacks, Nonviolence, Alabama, Harlem).
