This book traces the history of architecture from the beginning of the Renaissance in Italy, through its development in Europe and America, up to the counter-resistance movements in Britain in the eighteenth-century. Mr. Allsopp's "General History of Architecture," already well known as a standard work, is necessarily less detailed than the present volume which is the only book of its kind covering Renaissance architecture as a whole, seeing it from a modern point of view, and in the light of the most recent research.
