James Wright is a native of Martins Ferry, Ohio; a graduate of Kenyon College; and a veteran of United States Army service in Japan. He has studied also at the University of Vienna, and has taken M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Washington. Mr. Wright describes himself as "a bookish man" whose life has been uneventful. His work, however, has brought him a series of notable honors: a Fulbright fellowship, the Robert Frost Poetry Prize when he was an undergraduate, the Eunice Tietjens Memorial Prize from Poetry in 1955, the Kenyon Review Poetry Fellowship in 1958-1959, and a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in recognition of his creative work in literature. "Wright is that rare poet who can achieve the 'common in experience - uncommon in writing' that Robert Frost has asked for." - Saturday Review
