Discovering that he was not cut out for soldiering, Young Samuel Clemens left his volunteer regiment of the Confederate army and lit out for the West with his brother. Typical of border-state politics, his brother rertained his loyalty to the Union, and had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory. Roughing it is the account of the adventures and misadventures that followed. It is also the account of the raw youth Clemens transforming himself into Mark Twain as he himself is transforming the Western tall-tale into an art form. According to the author, "This book is merely a personal narrative, and not a pretentious history or a philosophical dissertation. It is a record of several years of variegated vagabondizing, and its object is rather to help the resting reader while away an idle hour than afflict him with metaphysics, or goad him with science."
