The Nichols File of The Gentleman's Magazine, the core of which is an unbroken monthly sequence of editorial file copies of this periodical maintained by John Nichols and his successors while they were proprietors, constitutes one of the most significant archives on the history of English publishing remaining unstudied in the latter decades of the twentieth century. As shelved at the Folger, the File consists of 213 bound volumes and half-volumes of The Gentlemen's Magazine, a complete run from the first volume (1731) through the June number of 1863. There are well over 100,000 pages of text in this series of volumes. Includes an Index.
