Lonesome John is a farmer who lives so far out in the country that, in his own words, "crows pack a lunch before setting out." The farmer, the scarecrow that seems tyo come alive as he builds it, and the equally alone and homeless young farmhand whom the farmer hesitatingly befriends are characters that at once deeply involve the reader and enter his heart and imagination.
