2 SUAREZ, THOMAS. Shedding The Veil: Mapping The European Discovery Of America And The World, Based On Selected Works From The Sudney R. Knafel Collection Of Early Maps, Atlases, And Globes 1434 - 1865.
World Scientific, Singapore: 1992. 9810208693 / 9789810208691 First Edition (Unstated). h Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition.
The fifteenth century simultaneously produced surges in the exploration of humanity, ideas, and science. Just as book production faciltated the assertion of new beliefs and the expansion of knowledge, map and atlas production was an integral part of the exploration of the world. The maps, atlses, portolan charts, and globe chosen from the Collection for this volume were selected to show the European discovery of the world, the history of the world's lifting its veil to explorers, mapmakers, and ultimately the people, beginning with the cartographic depiction of the world before Columbus and developing through American coastal sharts of the nineteenth century. Its intent is neither to glorify nor condemn the traumatic events of the past five centuries; its perspective is necessarily Eurocentric because it is seen through the eyes of her maps as interpreted this particular Western observer. Includes a Bibliography.
