Addison-Wesley, Reading:1995. 0201622920 / 9780201622928 Second printing, March 1995. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Good condition.
When the author covered the trial of Glenn Summerford for The New York Times, a snake-handling preacher who had just tried to murder his wife, Darlene, by snakebite, a world far beyond the trial opened up for him. Covington's story begins with a crime and a trial and then becomes an extraordinary exploration of a place, a people, and an author's descent into himself. The place is southern Appalachia - a country deep and unsettled, where the past and its culture collide with the economic and social realities of the present, leaving a residue of rootlessness, anxiety, and lawlessness.

236 CRANE, TIM. The Meaning Of Belief: Religion From An Atheist's Point Of View.
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2017. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
Contemporary debate about religion seems to be going nowhere. Atheists persist with their arguments, many plausible and some unanswerable, but these make no impact on religious believers. Defenders of religion find atheists equally unwilling to cede ground. The Meaning of Belief offers a way out of this stalemate. An atheist himself, Tim Crane writes that there is a fundamental flaw with most atheists' basic approach: religion is not what they think it is. Atheists tend to treat religion as a kind of primitive cosmology, as the sort of explanation of the universe that science offers. They conclude that religious believers are irrational, superstitious, and bigoted. But this view of religion is almost entirely inaccurate. Crane offers an alternative account based on two ideas. The first is the idea of a religious impulse: the sense people have of something transcending the world of ordinary experience, even if it cannot be explicitly articulated. The second is the idea of identification: the fact that religion involves belonging to a specific social group and participating in practices that reinforce the bonds of belonging. Once these ideas are properly understood, the inadequacy of atheists' conventional conception of religion emerges. The Meaning of Belief does not assess the truth or falsehood of religion. Rather, it looks at the meaning of religious belief and offers a way of understanding it that both makes sense of current debate and also suggests what more intellectually responsible and practically effective attitudes atheists might take to the phenomenon of religion. 4-3/8 x 7-1/8 inches. Tim Crane is Professor of Philosophy at Central European University, Budapest. "[A] lucid and thoughtful book… In a spirit of reconciliation, Crane proposes to paint a more accurate picture of religion for his fellow unbelievers."—James Ryerson, The New York Times Book Review "[A] valuable and compact contribution to the dialogue between atheists and believers. Crane writes as an atheist to an atheist audience in hopes of reducing the combativeness stirred up by 'New Atheists' such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, but he also provides useful language for religionists about their own experiences. By identifying the religious experience in terms of 'religious impulse' and 'identification' linked under a canopy of the sacred, Crane situates religious belief as complexly human, rather than something that should die with the advent of science. Tolerance with a goal of living peaceably with religionists should be the atheist aim, argues Crane. Crane's precise arguments, lucid writing, and astutely selected examples make this book enjoyable as well as clarifying. His concise unpacking of religion and violence in the context of war, as well as of the nitty-gritty of moral relativism, provides a vital lens for interpreting today's politics."—Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Tim Crane has written an unusual and excellent book about religion. By recognizing the psychological and social attitudes constitutive of religious belief, Crane enables us to see how shallow many atheist critiques are. He is following in the footsteps of serious thinkers about religion—William James, in particular, often comes to mind—and he presents with great clarity a far more sophisticated atheism than we usually find."—Philip Kitcher, Columbia University "Distinctive, thoughtful, and carefully argued, The Meaning of Belief contributes to correcting the misleading picture of religious belief promoted by many contemporary atheists, as well as exploring some of the reasons why religious belief plays such an important role in people's lives."—John Cottingham, University of Reading

239 CROSBY, DONALD A. The Extraordinary In The Ordinary: Seven Types Of Everyday Miracle.
State University of New York Press, Albany: 2017. h Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book.
Explores miracles as dimensions of everyday existence through the lens of religious naturalism. Miracles are usually regarded as an intrusion of a supernatural force upsetting the normal workings and laws of the universe, but if one is attentive to the natural world, one can instead find miracles beneath the surface of everyday existence. This outlook is part of Donald A. Crosby's religious naturalism, which he terms Religion of Nature, a belief system that posits the natural world to be the only world, without any underlying or transcending supernatural being, presence, or power. In The Extraordinary in the Ordinary, Crosby explores seven types of everyday miracles, such as time, language, and love, to show that the miraculous and ordinary are not opposed to each other. Rather, it is when we acknowledge the sacred depths and dimensions of everyday existence that we recognize the miracles that constantly surround us. Donald A. Crosby is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Colorado State University and the author of many books, including The Thou of Nature: Religious Naturalism and Reverence for Sentient Life; More Than Discourse: Symbolic Expressions of Naturalistic Faith; and Nature as Sacred Ground: A Metaphysics for Religious Naturalism, all published by SUNY Press.
