68 ARNOLD, BRUCE. Irish Art: A Concise History.
Thames and Hudson, London: 1989. 050020148X / 9780500201480 Revised Edition. s Softcover. Good condition.
Irish art of the early Christian era is justly celebrated. So, too, are the individual contributions of artists such as Jack B. Yeats. What is perhaps less widely recognized is the existence of a continuing and developing tradition of Irish art from the earliest times to the present day. Bruce Arnold traces the complex evolution of Irish art through three millennia, showing how it has drawn on Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Mediterranean and other diverse sources. As the story unfolds, Arnold repatriates Irish artists who are frequently regarded as "English" - including William Mulready, Daniel Maclise and James Barry - and shows how Irish paintings and sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, metalwork and architecture together form a rich and distinctive cultural heritage. Includes an Index. 179 illustrations, 20 in color.

70 ASHTON, DORE. A Fable Of Modern Art.
Thames and Hudson, London: 1980. 0500233012 / 9780500233016 First Edition (Unstated). h Hardcover with dustjacket in protective mylar cover. Good condition.
Dore Ashton's masterly analysis of modern art revolves around a number of clues, the most significant and persistent of which is provided by Balzac's brilliant and little know 'philosophic' story The Unknown Masterpiece, with its unexpected pointers towards Cezanne, Picasso and the abstract expressionists. This 'fable' is discussed not only within the context from which it emerged - early nineteenth-century romanticism - but also in relation to its embodiment of various attitudes art. Rilke, Schoenberg and Kandinsky are also drawn upon to illuminate the artist's yearning to express the inexpressible, to make the abstract concrete: Rilke's fascination with angelism, Schoenberg's absorption with Swedenborgianism, th influence of theosophy on Kandinsky. Includes an Index.

80 BALKEN, DEBRA BRICKER. John Storrs: Machine-age Modernist.
University Press of New England: 2010. First Edition. s Softcover. Brand new book.
Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name, this fully illustrated, all-color catalogue is the first examination of the work of American sculptor John Storrs (1885-1956) to appear in over twenty years. One of America's foremost modernists, Storrs produced a remarkable body of work that helped re-invigorate the then largely academic medium of sculpture. He was at the forefront of both the European and American avant-garde movements in the early twentieth century and was part of a vibrant culture that included his teacher Auguste Rodin and the members of Katherine Dreier's Socit Anonyme, such as artists Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Charles Demuth, and Joseph Stella. This catalogue gives particular emphasis to one of the most innovative phases of Storrs's work from the late 1910s to the 1930s when he was finding inspiration in the new skyscrapers and other modern buildings that he saw in New York and Chicago.
