81 ALCOVER, JOAN; ARRANZ-BRAVO, EDUARDO (ART); DOLL, KRISTINE (INTRODUCTION). Elegies.
Cross-Cultural Communications, Merrick: 2004. 0893043702 / 9780893043704 First Edition. Limited Edition. Catalan Poets Series. h Hardcover, no dustjacket. Brand New Book.
Joan Alcover (1854-1926) is one of Majorca's most beloved poets. He is certainly the Majorcan School's most human poet. How can one not be moved by this man who was forced to confront the deaths of nearly every one of his family members; a man whose depths of grief led him to create some of Spain's most poignant verses of individual despair? Translated into English from the Catalon by Kristine Doll and Robert E. Brown.

84 ALEGRÍA, CLARIBEL; FRED WHITEHEAD (EDITOR). Otredad | Otherness,
West End Press. s Softcover. Brand new book.
Claribel Alegria, born in Esteli, Nicaragua, in 1924, is one of the great voices in twentieth-century Latin American poetry. She left her family's Nicaraguan coffee plantation to spend her childhood in exile in El Salvador. Her writing of the 1950s and 1960s reflects the views of the "Committed Generation" of Central America, seeking social and political justice for its citizens. She shared the Casas de las Americas poetry prize in 1978 with Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli. In 1979, when the Sandinistas overthrew the Somoza regime, she returned to Nicaragua to help it rebuild. While both countries claim her, she credits the 1980 assassination of Salvadoran archbishop Oscar Romero as the pivotal event of her revolutionary commitment. Alegria's mature work reflects her anger and sense of loss over the murdered and "disappeared" throughout Latin America. "Because of them I called myself a cemetery," she notes. She praises women poets giving voice to the victims of state terror. Her major works include I Survive (1978), Flowers from the Volcano (1981), Sorrow (1999), and Casting Off (2003). In this volume, published in Madrid as Otredad in 2011, she separates her writing from her daily existence: "She who writes is the other one." Claribel Alegria, born in Esteli, Nicaragua, in 1924, is one of the great voices in twentieth-century Latin American poetry. Published By West End Press 5 x 8 in. 112 pages

90 ALIGHIERI, DANTE; TRANSLATED BY SLAVITT, DAVID R.; INTRODUCTION BY LERER, SETH. La Vita Nuova.
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2014. s Softcover. Brand new book.
La Vita Nuova (1292-94) has many aspects. Dante's libello, or "little book," is most obviously a book about love. In a sequence of thirty-one poems, the author recounts his love of Beatrice from his first sight of her (when he was nine and she eight), through unrequited love and chance encounters, to his profound grief sixteen years later at her sudden and unexpected death. Linked with Dante's verse are commentaries on the individual poems—their form and meaning—as well as the events and feelings from which they originate. Through these commentaries the poet comes to see romantic love as the first step in a spiritual journey that leads to salvation and the capacity for divine love. He aims to reside with Beatrice among the stars. David Slavitt gives us a readable and appealing translation of one of the early, defining masterpieces of European literature, animating its verse and prose with a fluid, lively, and engaging idiom and rhythm. His translation makes this first major book of Dante's stand out as a powerful work of art in its own regard, independent of its "junior" status to La Commedia. In an Introduction, Seth Lerer considers Dante as a poet of civic life. "Beatrice," he reminds us, "lives as much on city streets and open congregations as she does in bedroom fantasies and dreams." David R. Slavitt is a poet and the translator of more than ninety works of fiction, poetry, and drama. Seth Lerer is Dean of Arts and Humanities and Distinguished Professor of Literature at the University of California, San Diego. "The Vita Nuova, Dante's first major work of certain attribution, is an original and sophisticated creation, too often cast aside as little more than a youthful prologue to the Divine Comedy… This handsome English edition of the Vita Nuova is translated by David R. Slavitt and prefaced by an engaging essay by Seth Lerer… Freed from the customary shackles of academic apparatus, the poetic quality of its lyrics freshly reinstated, the Vita Nuova's signature hybrid texture is here elegantly conveyed."—Tristan Kay, The Times Literary Supplement "Some translators have been too academic, draining the vigor and wonder from this work but Slavitt's version stays true to the spirit… Considering all the books today about finding one's center in our crazy, image-driven culture, then, La Vita Nuova—especially in Slavitt's version—couldn't be more relevant."—Nick Owchar, The Los Angeles Times "Graceful, readable, and just—David Slavitt's translation is a delicate and surprising achievement. This is another triumph for Slavitt, and a treat for the rest of us."—Henry Taylor

99 ALLEN, PAULA GUNN. America The Beautiful: Last Poems.
West End Press: 2010. s Softcover. Brand new book.
These poems, written in the last decade of Paula Gunn Allen's life and the first years of the new century, capture the variety, ingenuity, and complexity of this beloved and influential Native American critic and poet. In the lexicon of Paula Gunn Allen, what makes America beautiful may come as a surprise: its horrors confront its hopefulness; its absurdities challenge its promise. A powerful, sustained lyrical and narrative sequence written in the midst of political and personal catastrophe (the second U.S. invasion of Iraq, a disastrous home fire, her own battle with lung cancer), Allen's last book of poems is at once a bonfire made up of the ruins of civilization, a call for one more effort to set things right, and a gift to us all from this fertile and generous writer. Paula Gunn Allen, Laguna Pueblo/Sioux/Scots/Lebanese poet, philosopher, scholar, and teacher, was born in Cubero, New Mexico, in 1939. She received her doctorate from the University of New Mexico in 1976; her dissertation evolved into a major work of cultural criticism, The Sacred Hoop: Recovering the Feminine in American Indian Traditions. Two volumes of her poetry, Skins and Bones and Life Is a Fatal Disease, were published by West End Press. She completed the manuscript for this book a week before her death on May 29, 2008 in Fort Bragg, California.
