John Charles Frmont (1813-1890), was one of the great heroes of America's age of Manifest Destiny. The expeditions he led through largely uncharted western territories discovered such landmarks as Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, and helped make the United States a trans-continental nation. The success of his early journeys gained him acclaim as a national celebrity. As a U.S. army major, he took control of California from the Bear Flag Republic in 1846, during the Mexican American War. He found a fortune in the California Gold Rush, and became one of the state's first two senators. In 1856, he ran for President as the first candidate of the new Republican Party. Historian Ferol Egan's compelling biography encompasses both the adventurous, eventful life of this complex leader and the relentless ambitions of an expanding nation during the years when the West was being explored and settled. This reprint includes a foreword by Richard Dillon. As a native Californian from Gold Rush country, Ferol Egan developed a love for the American West at an early age. A writer, retired teacher, and historian, Egan is the author of six books including Frmont: Explorer for a Restless Nation, for which he won the Gold Medal for nonfiction from the Commonwealth Club of California. He received the Silver Medal for Sand in a Whirlwind and the California Medal for The El Dorado Trail. He now resides in Berkeley, California. "Egan's book is a treasure of reading and research on John C. Fremont." -Nevada Magazine "A large wide-eyed, genuinely exciting book. [Egan] succeeds in showing exploration as creative initiative rather than individual escapism. . . . It scores as grand storytelling." -Kirkus "Few contemporary Western writers possess both the patience and the skill to combine a scholarly methodology and apparatus with the effective, readable prose that characterizes the work of Ferol Egan. This massive volume can best be described as a monumental contribution. Authoritative, organized to sustain reader interest, and beautifully written." -The Journal of the California Historical Society
